Tips to use your HVAC unit to alleviate allergies

Cough, headache, nausea,  sneezing, watery eyes, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose- these are allergy symptoms we’re all trying to avoid. Wearing a mask outdoors may filter out pollen and other allergens, but it can only do so much if your Heating & Air Conditioning system at home isn’t properly maintained. Here are some tips to use your HVAC unit to alleviate allergies

Clean and dust the area around your indoor/ outdoor HVAC unit.

Make it a priority to thoroughly remove dirt, dust, or debris around your indoor and outdoor Heating & Air Conditioning units, otherwise, these contaminants also get circulated through your home.

Keep the space around your outdoor Heating & Air Conditioning equipment clean and tidy by removing all foliage and debris within two feet from the base of your AC unit.

Keep registers and return vents dust-free

Return vents pull in air and put it back into your heating and cooling system.

Dirt and debris around air vents may indicate a large number of contaminants flowing through the system, aggravating allergy symptoms and other respiratory illnesses.

Clean registers and return vents with a damp towel to reduce allergens in your home. Avoid using harsh, abrasive cleaning products such as bleach and ammonia.

Adjust your indoor humidity levels

Indoor humidity levels are also an important factor when it comes to alleviating-  and preventing-  allergy symptoms.

One way to relieve allergy symptoms and discomfort is to adjust the indoor humidity level to below 50%.

Dust mites, the most common indoor allergen, die in low humidity levels while thriving at humidity levels around 70 – 80%. Cockroaches and molds also thrive in warm, humid homes.

Greatly reduce allergy triggers by keeping humidity below 50%.

Run your HVAC with clean air filters

Your air filter should clean most of the indoor air as it circulates through your living space. So running your Heating & Air Conditioning with clean air filters play a huge role in maintaining the overall comfort levels in your home.

With clogged air filters, airflow is reduced and your system can’t efficiently filter dust from the air. It traps dirt and debris that eventually circulate through your home, worsening allergy symptoms.

Invest in higher quality filters to remove more allergen particles. However, for air filters to work, you must replace them regularly. Every 2-3 months should do unless you have pets. We recommend replacing your air filters monthly if you have pets living with you.

Schedule a maintenance appointment at least once a year

Your Heating & Air Conditioning system can significantly improve indoor air quality and reduce allergens. The more efficient it works, the more allergens it can clear from your indoor air.

This is why poorly maintained Heating & Air Conditioning systems may trigger allergies and make symptoms worse, causing more pain and discomfort.

Scheduling maintenance ensures your system is running efficiently, and you’re getting the most out of it. It also reduces the risk of costly Heating & Air Conditioning repairs in the future.
