How to Clean Your Dishwasher

Your reliable dishwasher can be loaded with all sorts of dishware, knives, glassware, pans and pots, and have them come out sparkling clean. But in doing its job, your dishwasher can get dirtier than you think. To learn how to clean your dishwasher properly, read on!

It’s not enough that the plumbing system of your dishwasher is correctly set up. Your dishwasher needs to be maintained diligently so you can keep reaping its benefits. The good news is, it’s not difficult to clean your dishwasher.

There are easy steps you can follow:

1. Prepare everything you need to get started: dish soap, dish cloths or paper towels, scrub brush, vinegar, and baking soda.

2. Clean the filter. Your dishwasher filters food and other debris. Overtime, the filter gets clogged. This can damage your dishwasher and affect its performance.
Lift the filter and soak it in warm, soapy water for a few minutes. Remove stubborn food particles or residue with a scrub brush, then rinse with hot water.

3. Located on the bottom of the basin, the drain can get clogged over time. You’d want to check the drain for buildup. and use a sponge to wipe out what you can reach. You may also use a paper towel to remove gunk and residue.
By regularly checking and clearing the drain, you can improve the efficiency of your dishwasher and prolong its lifespan.

4. Run a wash cycle with vinegar — a natural deodorizer, cleaner, and sanitizer that effectively gets rid of grime, grease, and musty odors.

Fill a dishwasher-safe container with a cup of white vinegar. Place it on the upper rack of the dishwasher, then run the dishwasher through a hot water cycle.

5. Once the vinegar cycle is done, sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run the dishwasher through a short, hot water cycle.

6. If your dishwasher still smells after the vinegar and baking soda cycles, check beneath the door seals of your dishwasher. It can be a breeding ground for mildew that causes the dishwasher to smell. Scrub the crevices in the door seals and underneath the door seals with a paste made of water and baking soda. When you’re not running the dishwasher, you can leave the door ajar so mildew doesn’t reappear.

7. It’s equally important to keep the dishwasher exterior sparkling clean, as well. Clean the outside panel with a cleaning cloth and warm, soapy water, then dry it with a towel.

You may use a stainless steel cleaner or glass cleaner for dishwashers made of stainless steel. Just use a separate dishcloth to wipe the surface dry to avoid water spots.
