Common Cause of Low Water Pressure in Your Home

We depend on water everyday for many important things. From taking a shower to washing clothes and preparing meals, water pressure can affect how fast and easy a task can get done at home.

So when there’s a sudden drop of water pressure, it’s such a nuisance and inconvenience that you’d want to fix the problem as soon as possible. Also, the inefficiency can force you to spend more money than you have to.

Fortunately, you can easily do troubleshooting steps on your own. It also helps to know the common causes of low water pressure in your home, to begin with.

Common Cause of Low Water Pressure in Your Home

1. Faulty plumbing fixture

Low water pressure can be due to plumbing fixtures that, over time, have become faulty. Dirt, rust, or limestone buildup can affect the performance of the aerators on your faucet, which is supposed to reduce the amount of flow without affecting the pressure.

Check out the fixtures if only one or a few of them have a low flow. Remove any build-up and see if it makes a difference. You may also replace the fixtures, if necessary.

2. Leaking pipes

A leaky pipe can cause a drop in pressure. Damaged or ruptured pipes may misdirect your water supply, keeping water from reaching its destination. If your pipes are leaking, you’ll also notice flooding in your basement or foundation. If this is the case, you might have to call a local plumber to come ASAP and perform the necessary repairs. Otherwise, you’re risking more damage to your property. Notice a sudden decrease in water pressure from only one or two fixtures? It’s time to check for leaks.

3. Faulty hot water heater

The accumulation of sediments in your hot water tank may result in low water pressure. A plumber can flush and remove sediment and scale from inside the tank. If your water heater is old, it may be best to replace it.

4. Your main house shut-off valve isn’t open all the way

Located most likely where the main city supply pipe enters your home, the shut-off valve is worth checking, especially if you’re the only home on the block that has low water pressure.

If the valve isn’t fully open, your pressure is low. So make sure it’s open all the way.
