The thermostatic expansion valve (TEV) plays an important role in the operation of your HVAC system. An adjustable restrictor regulating the amount of refrigerant liquid that’s injected into the evaporator, the TEV is situated between the condenser and the evaporator.
Over time, the valve may fail internally. Problems also occur due to a blocked inlet screen and contaminants entering the valve. It may overheat and fail due to positioning issues as well.
Other problems may cause the TEV to stop working as it should. So it helps to recognize the symptoms your thermostatic expansion valve has gone bad, so you can get the issue fixed immediately.
Symptoms Your Thermostatic Expansion Valve Has Gone Bad
- Odd noises coming from your AC
Does your air conditioner start producing odd noises while it’s still operational? Loud, strange noises coming from your AC may suggest you’re dealing with a faulty compressor or loose parts. The problem may also be due to a failing TEV, which can cause your AC to produce clanging, banging, or squealing noises that only get worse over time.

- Decrease in cooling performance
Your AC system’s poor cooling performance may indicate a problem with the thermostatic expansion valve, but it can also be due to a number of things: improperly sized units, dirty air filters, clogged condenser coils, blower fan issues, and more.
If you suddenly notice warm spots in your house, or if your AC fails to meet the desired temperature setting, don’t forget to check the thermostatic expansion valve.
- Higher than normal energy consumption
When the TEV fails to shut off properly, refrigerant keeps feeding into the compressor. It will also keep operating to deal with the gas. You’ll notice your AC operating continuously, resulting in higher utility bills than usual.
On top of this, the compressor wears out faster. This can mean you need to replace your unit, and this may come with a hefty price tag.
- Ice on the coils/ HVAC unit
Dirty air filters and ductwork problems may result in frozen coils. A failing TEV may be the culprit, too.
If the valve isn’t working properly, the refrigerant may keep moving even if it doesn’t have to, or get too cold.
This can lead to frozen coils, or ice forming on your AC, which indicates the TEV isn’t doing its job.
