A sudden disruption of electricity in the dead of winter isn’t ideal. But power outages do occur, commonly due to severe weather conditions, equipment failure, fallen trees, and high energy demand. While waiting for HVAC services, or for the power to come back, there are effective ways to keep kids and pets warm during an outage.
Limit outdoor time, especially during extensive power outages.
Whenever you open the door, you’re letting out some of the warmth that your house is retaining.
Insulate the windows to reduce heat loss.

Keep your freezer or fridge closed.
Unless absolutely necessary, don’t open your freezer. If the door stays closed, your freezer can keep food frozen for 24 – 36 hours.
Keep children bundled up by dressing them warmly in layers.
Kids can get hypothermia faster, so give your kids warm clothes and blankets.as soon as the power goes out. Aside from layers of loose, lightweight clothing, make them wear socks, gloves or mittens, and a hat. It’s crucial to keep the head, hand, and feet covered.
Extra bedding will keep pets warm.
An extra bedding will add warmth. If you have small animals, wrap a blanket around their habitat and leave an opening for ventilation.
Placing chemical heat packs inside their habitat will also help. Heat packs shouldn’t be applied directly to the skin of any animal, so it’s important to put the heat packs into three layers of fabric before placing them in the cage.
Erecting a tent indoors will help combat extreme cold.
The smaller the space, the warmer everyone is. It’s even better if multiple people can fit inside the tent. It will also feel warmer inside the tent compared to outside, since a tent will trap air and block the wind.
Stock up on essential items.
This includes reliable flameless light sources, plenty of safe drinking water, foods and drinks that are easy to heat, and boxes of blankets.
Keeping a few dog sweaters on hand will also help.
