Smart Thermostat Installation Instructions

Steps to Install Smart Thermostat

  • Switch OFF HVAC System

Firstly, turn OFF the Greenwood HVAC system to the breaker panel before you remove the thermostat to protect yourself from electric danger. This will cut thermostat power and stop accidental damage to electrical components when opening the wires. Some conventional battery-powered thermostats might still appear ON even if the system is OFF. It is a better option to turn the thermostat ON and see if the heating or cooling equipment starts. This way you can be assured that the switches are OFF.

  •  Remove Faceplate

To access the low-voltage wiring and backplate, remove the faceplate of your old thermostat. It should come off with some effort, but if not, check for hidden screws underneath. If you can’t find any, consult an electrician or HVAC contractor Greenwood. Before disconnecting the wires, take a photo to document the connections. Some thermostats include stickers to label the wires—use them before disconnecting.

  • Remove Backplate

Next, disconnect the thermostat wires from the backplate. Depending on your model, you have to unscrew small screws holding each wire in place or you can also press tiny tabs with a pen to release them. Be gentle with the wires to avoid damage and further issues. Loose the screws that hold the backplate to the wall and remove all the screws. This will remove the backplate easily.

  • Fix New Backplate

Hold the backplate of the new thermostat against the wall where you want to install it. Mark the points for the screws using a pencil and drill the small holes there. Before you fix the backplate, feed the thermostat wires through the hole in the backplate. Once the wires are in the correct place, screw the backplate into the wall directly.

  •  Reconnect Wires

Once the backplate is attached, connect the wires to the corresponding terminals. To place the right wires, match the labeled wires with the terminals. If not, check the picture of the old wiring to match each wire. Make sure to keep the connections accurate. This is because incorrect wiring can cause malfunctions. Once connected, tighten the wires securely to avoid loose connections.

  • Install New Faceplate

With the wires in place, snap the faceplate of your new thermostat onto the backplate. If it doesn’t fit easily, don’t force it—wires may be in the way. Tuck them back into the wall and try again. Next, turn the breaker back on for your HVAC system. This will restore power to the thermostat, and it will start up, just like a computer. Allow it a few moments to fully boot up before adjusting any settings.

  • Connect Thermostat with Wi-Fi

Once your new smart thermostat powers on, it will guide you through setup, including connecting to Wi-Fi and configuring its companion app for remote control. The process may vary by model, so follow the on-screen instructions carefully. Some models may also offer additional features like voice control or personalized temperature settings.
