If you invested in a reliable heat pump and installed it properly, you’re less likely to encounter major issues anytime soon. But air source heat pumps can still fail every now and then, as with most mechanical equipment. It helps to be aware of common air source heating problems, and how they can impact your home and everyday life.

What is an air source heat pump (ASHP) and how does it work?

An ASHP essentially moves heat energy around. During winter, it draws in heat from outside your home, then transfers it inside.

One of the most efficient appliances to heat your home, an air source heat pump relies on electricity and doesn’t have to burn fuel to generate heat. It also delivers 10-15x as much energy as it uses.

Common Air Source Heating Problems

1. Your heat pump struggles with doing its job, which is delivering warmth.

An air filter that’s clogged up with dust and lint can restrict airflow. This affects how much air can enter the heat pump to be heated. It’s recommended to change the air filter every 1-3 months.

Aside from a clogged filter, your heat pump’s poor performance may be due to a broken reversing valve, a faulty thermostat, or a blocked outdoor unit. If the heat pump is the wrong size, it won’t be able to take care of your home’s heating needs, either.

2. The unit is noisy.

Air source heat pumps may cause noise concerns, particularly the compressor and the fan, which you can hear operating when the heat pump is in use. Depending on the manufacturer and the installation, the unit may reach 40-60 decibels.

However, if you hear loud humming, hissing, rattling, or repeated gurgling sounds, try changing the air filter and clearing away outside debris. If the issue persists, you may have to call a professional to make sure everything is okay.

3. Your heat pump isn’t turning on.

The problem can be due to a tripped circuit breaker. If this isn’t the case, a faulty thermostat or a failed start capacitor may be the culprit.

If you hear a clicking noise when the unit should be turning on, it’s probably the latter. An HVAC technician can easily replace it.
