Your boiler –like any appliance– can fail or stop working when you least expect it, causing major inconvenience. But when it’s doing its job, you don’t have to think twice about heating your home.

fix flame failure on a boiler

Flame failure is among the issues that can affect your boiler. This problem may occur due to many reasons: fuel valve closed, low airflow, electrical supply failure, loss of ignition energy, malfunctioning of the flame scanner, and more.

Aside from flame failure, there are other problems that can impact the performance of your unit. Some of these issues may require professional boiler repair, but there are steps a homeowner can safely tackle on their own.

Here are some of the things you can do if your boiler fails on the main flame:

  1. Check your power supply

Since it requires electricity for the ignition to work, a tripped fuse can keep your boiler from functioning properly. Rule this out by checking your power supply.

  1. Clean dirty flame scanners

Inspect and clean flame scanners at least once a month, since they’re responsible for sensing active flame. If the flame sensor doesn’t detect a flame, it will restrict the flow of fuel to your boiler as a safety precaution.

Carbon buildup may prevent the sensor from working properly. Hence, it’s crucial to get it cleaned on a regular basis and ensure it’s properly aligned so it can sense the flame.

  1. Clean fuel oil strainer

This keeps contaminants from clogging your system, but it loses efficiency over time if not cleaned or replaced on a regular basis.

A clog may cut off the flow of fuel, resulting in flame failure or an inefficient main flame.

Clean and inspect the fuel oil strainer weekly to avoid this problem.

  1. Refill heating oil

Running out of oil won’t necessarily damage your unit, but it causes your boiler to stop working.

Check the tank for the gauge that indicates how much oil is left. Once you’ve confirmed you have run out of heating oil, place an order with your supplier right away.

  1.  See if it has low pressure

Check the pressure gauge located on the front of the boiler. If the pressure is low, you may have recently bled your radiators. You can fix the issue by adding more water to the system and re-pressurizing the boiler.

But if you detect any leaks, it’s best to call a professional.
