A warm home during the cold weather is everything. So heat pump problems – such as a faulty compressor – can bring a lot of stress, even more so if it’s all you have for space heating and cooling.

when heat pump isn’t working

When your heat pump isn’t working properly, there are several places to check before calling an HVAC technician.

Things to Check When Your Heat Pump Isn’t Working Right

  1. The thermostat settings

Is your heat pump not cooling or heating? Check the thermostat settings. You may have to get the thermostat recalibrated if you can’t get the temperature to where you want. Also, make sure that the thermostat is level, and that there’s no dirt or dust inside the unit.

If the thermostat display isn’t on, it means your thermostat doesn’t have power. You may need to replace the batteries.

  1. Power

If your unit is hardwired, check the electrical panel for a blown fuse, or a circuit breaker that has tripped.

  1. Closed registers

For ducted heat pumps, make sure that the registers aren’t clogged with dirt or obstructed by furniture.

  1. Refrigerant levels

Watch out for signs of a frozen coil, which often indicates low refrigerant levels.

A heat pump that’s low on refrigerant can’t meet your home’s heating or cooling demands.

We recommend calling an HVAC technician to accurately diagnose the issue, repair any leaks, and recharge the refrigerant.

  1. The starter capacitor

The starter capacitor delivers an initial energy boost to turn your heat pump on. Your unit won’t start if the starter capacitor is broken.

If you try to turn it on and you hear a faint clicking noise from your heat pump instead, your starter capacitor is probably failing.

For your safety, we don’t recommend replacing it on your own.

Maintaining Your Heat Pump

The average lifespan of your heat pump is 10-15 years.

With regular heat pump maintenance, your technician can catch small problems before they cost you more money, and perform the necessary repairs to keep your unit running optimally.

Changing the air filter every 1-3 months also helps. This keeps your system from working harder to get the heated air from the heat pump into your home.
