As a homeowner, there are maintenance tips you may follow to help extend the lifespan of your AC, and even stop AC repairs before they happen. However, air conditioning breakdowns are unavoidable; sooner or later, you’ll need the help of a professional. Everyday wear and tear can subject your system to a lot of stress, which can lead to unexpected repairs. Here are some air conditioner repair tips you can try before calling a Good Guy:
Clean AC filters if you notice poor cooling performance
Dirt, dust, and debris can build up over time and clog your air filters. This results in restricted airflow, with your system working harder but less efficiently.
If it’s taking longer than usual for your unit to cool down to the desired temperature, it’s time to check the AC filters. Remove as much loose filth as you can, and use a vacuum for the rest. You may also use a brush to scrub a cleaning solution.
Ideally, you clean or replace the AC filters every month, and more frequently if you have pets or if there are many people living in your home.
Check the thermostat if your AC is blowing warm air
If you accidentally switched the thermostat from ‘cool’ to ‘heat’, your AC will blow hot air. This is easy to fix on your own. Just switch the thermostat back to ‘cool’.
Some thermostats are battery-operated. If it appears dead, it might be time to replace the batteries.
Reset the circuit breaker if your AC won’t turn on
If the unit doesn’t turn on at all, the breaker could’ve tripped. If your AC and several other appliances are on the same breaker, the chances of it having tripped are high.
To quickly fix this, just reset the breaker by turning it off and then turning it back on.
If a fuse has blown, don’t replace it without turning the power off. We won’t even recommend touching it unless you know what you’re doing.
Is your air conditioner noisy? Check the fan for any damage or stuck debris
If you notice rattling sounds coming from your AC, it may be due to debris that’s stuck within the outdoor condenser unit’s grate. You may also see rocks and twigs trapped inside. To fix this, just turn the unit off, then safely remove the debris by hand. See if this takes care of the problem.
