4 Factors to Consider When Buying a New Air Conditioner

Are you about to purchase yourself a brand-new air conditioner? If so, the prospect of investing in a machine that can cool your home down can be incredibly exciting to you, so much so that you may jump the gun and purchase one without much thought. However, that’s a one-way ticket to wasting your hard-earned money, and to make sure that you spend your money wisely, you need to consider the various factors that make an AC unit the right one for you!

With that in mind, here are the considerations you need to make before you purchase an air conditioner:

1. The Size of Your Home

While the size of your home might not seem like one of the most important factors to consider, it is perhaps the most important one, given that it determines the size of the unit that you’ll be purchasing! Getting an AC unit that’s too big for your home will only end up costing you more on electricity bills in the long run, and this also applies to getting an AC size that’s too small. Both ways will force you to spend more money than you need.

So, to pick the right AC for your room’s size, here’s a rule of thumb you can follow. If you have a small room that’s around 20 square meters, a 2 to 2.5 kW unit is good. Medium rooms that are around 30 to 60 square meters can get away with a 3 to 6 kW unit, while any rooms larger than 60 square meters will opt for 6 kW units and above.

Keep in mind, though, that you can go slightly higher or lower depending on how hot your room gets as well. For instance, a room with plenty of shade won’t need as much cooling as one that’s exposed to the sun!

2. The Efficiency Ratings

From the various models you see in the market, everything has its own efficiency rating. This is given to you as either EER, which stands for Energy Efficiency Rating, or BTU, which is the cooling output.

To keep things simple, though, just keep an eye on the EER and compare it to what’s deemed as a good EER. That way, you understand just how efficient a unit is.

3. The Plug Type

As with all appliances, machines, and essentially anything that consumes power, you need to pick the right plug type for your AC. The typical plug type that most ACs use is the three-prong 125V/15A plug type that most homes will support. Larger models will have more than that, and if that worries you, reach out to your electrician.

Your electrician can determine if your home’s plug can support the AC. If not, they can make the necessary upgrades to ensure it will!

4. The Cost

The cost of an AC is a big factor because it determines if you’ll be able to afford it or not. You can find a wide variety of ACs in the market that have their respective prices, but the best way to get the best deal out there is to shop around. Check online, ask around, and visit various stores until you find the one with the best price.

The best thing about shopping around is that you can find good deals, such as the best way to pick an AC that’s on sale or looking for packages that include other appliances or services.

Apart from the factors we’ve shared above, you can consider other factors too, such as after-sales service, the brand, and more. Either way, when buying an AC, it is important to consider the factors we’ve talked about. They will affect your final purchase, and more often than not, if you’ve carefully considered one, then you will end up with an AC that you’ll be incredibly happy with!
